Finger
Lakes Hematology & Oncology accepts patients who have
already received a confirmed diagnosis of cancer from
their primary care physician or surgeon.
We know that finding out you have cancer is never easy.
You and your family probably have a lot of questions.
This section of our site is designed to help you become
familiar with FLHO's process of treating cancer through
chemotherapy.
Your medical team will work with you to create an in-depth
plan of care that includes the most effective treatments
available. When you are away from our office, a doctor
is on call to speak with you 24 hours a day, seven days
a week.
Our Facility
At FLHO you will find patient-friendly examination rooms
and treatment areas. We ensure your privacy to enable
you to have discussions about your diagnosis, treatment,
concerns.
Intravenous infusion treatments are usually given in our
common treatment room. This area is designed to give you
open access and conversation with the nurses and other
patients. Amenities such as recliner chairs, individual
TVs, music, magazines, and games are available to help
make you as comfortable as possible. You may bring your
own earphones or borrow ours.
We offer numerous ways to help you feel your best during
your care. Whether you need help with a wig, nutritional
information, locating a support group, connecting with
other services, or navigating
the cost of care, we are here to help you.
If you have concerns about the impact of your family history
on your own health or that of other family members, FLHO
offers
cancer risk assessment.
For Your Comfort
Companions
We suggest you bring one friend or relative (whom you
will need to designate on a HIPAA privacy form to be present
when discussing your treatment) with you to your first
chemo visit. It often helps to have another person present
to listen to the educational information we provide you.
We are here to help you and your
family through this experience and make it as pleasant
as possible.
Food, Beverages, Medications
We suggest you bring lunch or a snack if you will be with
us at mealtimes; we are not able to provide meals. We
do have complimentary ginger ale, fruit juices, coffee
and tea. It's important to be well-hydrated during and
after your chemo. We have pillows and blankets, and we
suggest you wear comfortable clothing. Be sure to bring
with you any oral medications that you normally take during
the day; they should be taken as scheduled unless you
are otherwise directed by your physician. While receiving
treatment you will be able to move about within the treatment
room but not outside of it.
Entertainment/Electronics
Feel free to bring a personal music or video device (to
be used with earphones), reading material, hand crafts
such as knitting, or even work, if you choose. Any personal
electronic device must operate silently for the comfort
of all who are receiving treatment. You are welcome to
bring a laptop, but be aware that we do not provide any
wired or wireless Internet access. Cell phone usage is
not permitted in any patient treatment area. FLHO is not
responsible for the loss or damage of patients' belongings.
