The First Steps

FLHO would like to introduce you to what you can expect when you come for chemotherapy. Rest assured this information will be provided to you again at your first visit, Our goal is to help you throughout your treatment and to make your experience with us a positive one.

Orientation

FLHO staff takes each new patient through an orientation process. This includes touring our facility and meeting the doctors, nurses, and staff members. You will also be given instructions on medications to be taken in advance of your first treatment (if any), the suggestion to bring a companion to at least the first treatment to help you absorb information, and any cautions about driving, as applicable.

We are here to help you work through your questions and concerns. Working together, we hope you feel more in control and more comfortable as you move forward with your cancer treatment.

Your Treatment Plan

Your first consultation with us will include a review of your medical records, diagosis information, and health history. You and your physician will discuss a chemotherapy treatment plan outlining the drugs to be used, the schedule, and side effect management. Your doctor may also discuss clinical trial options.

Your chemotherapy treatment plan is developed prior to the initiation of chemotherapy. A chemotherapy treatment plan includes:
  • Chemotherapy regimen and starting dosages
  • Duration of treatment and number of planned cycles
  • Possible side effects of chemotherapy
Your medical team will provide and discuss educational materials about the drugs, treatment processes, and diagnosis-related information. Be sure to talk with your doctor about resource materials you discover on your own. Advice about diet, nutrition and supplements is also available.

Your medical team will discuss your progress and any plan adjustments on an ongoing basis. You are also urged to call FLHO any time day or night when you have a question, concern, symptom, or problem. We are here to help you.
